Title: Investigation of transition metal complexes and their
application in fabrication of inorganic nanoparticles via
controlled thermal decomposition

Summary:

The introductory part will be devoted to a brief presentation of the University of Maribor with a
particular emphasis on the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and, above all, the
laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry. The main research areas of our team will be presented, ranging
from synthesis and characterization of coordination compounds to synthesis of nanoparticles by
advanced methods. Coordination compounds of transition metals, especially those of copper,
cobalt, nickel, and iron, with organic N – donor molecules acting as ligands, have attracted a great
deal of interest due to their interesting structures and magnetic properties. Some examples of recent
achievements in this area will be presented. By controlled thermal decomposition of those
compounds, nanosized metals, metal oxides or (in the case of sulfur – containing ligands) sulfides
can be obtained. In the second part of the lecture, some recent research in the preparation of
inorganic nanoparticles by other advanced methods, like sonochemical synthesis and mechanical
alloying, will be presented. Possible applications of as-prepared nanosized materials in forward
osmosis and photocatalysis will be discussed.
